All you need is love ... and a continuous pruning program!

Each year starting in February, we brave the elements - pruning shears in hand.

If we're lucky, we finish by the end of May.

Hugh Berries!

Pruning results in longer and more vigorous (and thicker) shoot growth in the next season. It also results in larger berries, but there is a tradeoff between desired size and yield of fruit. Moderate to heavy pruning tends to shift the ripening period forward so that most of the remaining fruit ripens together and early. Light pruning results in a longer season of ripening. By wise selection of canes and lateral shoots, we also distribute the fruit on the bush so it's easier to pick!
